Battery production powers up at Munster University

Worldwide Lithium battery demand is rising driven by demand for a wide variety of battery-powered products such as mobile phones, portable digital audio players, laptops and electric powered vehicles. The lithium battery technology is on the verge of dramatic change with new materials being tested and developed to meet the growing demand

Manufacturing lithium batteries is done in small laboratory environments through to full mass production dry rooms. These high energy batteries must be produced in less than 1% humidity environments because lithium reacts with water vapour to form lithium hydroxide, hydrogen and heat. Water vapour acts as a catalyst, so lithium metal exposed to moisture levels greater than 1% results in poorer battery quality, performance and shelf life.

The University of Munster in Germany have had a positive experience with Munters,  installing one of our high efficiency desiccant MDU air treatment systems, to supply ultra low dewpoint air. As the market leader Munters have numerous installations in the lithium battery industry around the world and have mastered the challenge of supplying dry air at very low dewpoint and high air volumes from both a technological and economical standpoint.

Munters energy efficient desiccant air treatment systems are specially designed to control moisture levels in lithium processing at -50°C dewpoint.  Our system design is based on how dry the air is to begin with, the moisture load the workers contribute, a reliable moisture control system and the construction integrity of the room.

Munters have made system developments to increase energy efficiency in our air treatment systems to ensure Munters maintains its leading position in this technology
